New recreational facilities for Greens Lake

Wednesday 18 November, 2020

A barbecue and shelter are among new recreational amenities being installed at Greens Lake in November and December.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) will undertake works to install a barbecue and shelter, a fixed crest weir and bollards along the popular Greens Lake recreational area.

Work on the barbecue and shelter and the fixed crest weir began on 11 November. The weir will be installed in the channel between the Fresh Lake and Greens Lake to help enhance the environmental values of the area.

From 7 December 2020, bollards will be installed along the foreshore.

In total the works are expected to take place for three to four weeks, and the lake will remain open during this time. All construction is expected to be complete by 18 December 2020.

Some areas along the foreshore may have limited access at stages during construction, but caravans will still be able to park in areas where works are not taking place.

GMW Manager Water Delivery Services Warren Blyth said the new facilities will boost recreation in Greens Lake and complimented the installation of the toilet and shower amenities in 2019.

“Greens Lake has not been used as a storage facility for GMW in more than five years,” Mr Blyth said.

“However, Greens Lake is a popular recreational facility, and is visited by thousands every year. These new amenities will add even more recreational value to the area, while also protecting the environmental values of the lake.

“The bollards will also prevent visitors from camping directly on the lakebed, preventing erosion and maintaining the lake’s water quality.”

Visitors to Greens Lake will need to adhere to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, which can be found at the Department of Health and Human Services website.

Mr Blyth said it was also important for those planning to visit Greens Lake, or any of GMW’s lakes, dams or reservoirs, to maintain physical distancing.

“Please be mindful to avoid crowding in public spaces – this is especially important for very popular areas such as Greens Lake,” he said.
