Blue-green algae warning reminder

Wednesday 11 November, 2020

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions ease, across Victoria, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding the public to avoid direct contact with water in both Lake Eildon and Tullaroop Reservoir after high levels of blue‑green algae were detected.

The blue-green algae warnings have been in place since July 2020, with GMW undertaking regular monitoring of the sites.

GMW General Manager of Water Storage Services, Martina Cusack said for anyone keen to take advantage of the warmer weather, there are a range of GMW sites open for recreation such as Lake Nillahcootie, which is close to Lake Eildon and Cairn Curran Reservoir, which is near Tullaroop Reservoir.  Lake Eppalock, Lake Mulwala and the Nagambie Lakes are also currently available for recreation.

“Visitors to the lake can also still sightsee and enjoy other activities at Lake Eildon and Tullaroop Reservoir that do not involve direct contact with the water,” Ms Cusack said.

GMW is also reminding people to adhere to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, which includes gatherings outdoors in no more than 10 people, wearing masks at all times and maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 metres.

Background

  • Warning signs have been positioned at major recreational areas around Lake Eildon and Tullaroop Reservoir and will remain in place while high levels of blue-green algae are present.  Lake Eildon and Tullaroop Reservoir are not closed to the public.
  • Blue-green algae are very small and can be present in water at high levels even when there is no obvious change to the colour of water.
  • Blue-green algae occur naturally in waterbodies. They contain toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Characteristic signs of algae contact are skin rashes or itchiness; sore eyes, ears and nose; or if swallowed, nausea or vomiting.
  • GMW is continuing to monitor the situation in Lake Eildon and Tullaroop Reservoir.
