If you live in Kyabram, Tatura, Merrigum or Tongala and you are a Goulburn-Murray Water customer, it is likely Mick Souter will be the man to help with any irrigation-related queries.
Mick was born and bred in Tongala and is based at GMW’s Kyabram office where he works as a Customer Service Coordinator. He’s a key part of the local community – and likes it that way.
“My kids are here too. I’ve got three children, aged 29, 27 and 25, and one grandchild who is nearly two.”
And Mick is proud to mention there are two more grandchildren on the way.
Outside of work, you might find Mick on a sports field – most likely playing or coaching football and cricket.
When at work, Mick looks after the Central Goulburn Irrigation Area. This includes responding to general enquiries, answering questions about connecting to the irrigation system or, if it happens to be the start of irrigation season, questions about water supply.
Mick’s significant experience in the water industry also helps with customer queries – as he marks close to 35 years with GMW.
He’s worked as a relief water bailiff, a water bailiff, a roster bailiff and even as a water planner for a number of years – now known as a Water Delivery Consultant.
“I’m always here in summer for the irrigation season, and I’m happy to help answer customer questions when they arise,” he said.
If it’s the end of season, Mick says locals are keen to know about stock and domestic supply and water management during the shutdown period (May 15 to August 15 each year).
“The last six to eight years have also seen massive changes in this industry,” Mick said. “We’ve gone from farmers leaving notes in red letterboxes with their water orders to a fully automated water delivery system that works at the touch of a button.”
“My role also means I’m in charge of 18 to 20 staff, so I help them to manage their workload. It’s a good role, it’s rewarding and I work with some fantastic people,” he said.
