A single conversation is all it takes to change the course of someone’s career.
Julian Bishop can attest to this. Earlier in the year he was looking for a new job but was not quite sure what he wanted to do.
“My old man was reading the papers and noticed Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) had an upcoming recruitment day nearby,” Julian said.
“I went along to the recruitment day and liked what I saw, so I sent in my resume once I got home.”
Julian was successful in his application to become a Customer Service Officer – the modern-day equivalent of a water bailiff – and hasn’t looked back since.
“I never considered it as a career but it’s a fantastic job. I’m so glad I ended up here.”
Ngaire Harlan had similarly never considered working in the water sector. But when she finished school and began looking for full-time work, she decided to apply for another of the vacant Customer Service Officer positions.
“I didn’t know what to expect from the job, but it has been really good,” she said.
“I like the independence we have and appreciate that the work is hands-on.
“There has been plenty to learn but the team’s been good. I know if I have a question, I can give any of them a call and they’ll help me out.”
Julian said he had also found the job a welcome change.
“I’d been working in a shed as a panel beater for 12 years beforehand, so I absolutely love that I’m always out and about now,” he said.
GMW Distribution Customer Service Manager West Paul Gilchrist said he was pleased to be offering career pathways for people from the region.
“It’s a fairly remote area out here, so it’s great we can create career opportunities for people from the local community like Julian and Ngaire,” he said.
“Being willing to learn is the main thing in this team, and both have certainly shown that.”
