Fundraiser for local cancer charity shatters goals

A Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) staff member’s fundraising efforts have resulted in a significant donation to a charity supporting people dealing with cancer.

Founded in 2012, The Gift provides support to locals who are living with cancer. Its footprint encompasses Tongala, Stanhope, Rushworth, Tatura, and Undera.

GMW Commercial Manager Lauren Hicks raised $10,000 for the charity in 2022, and had the aim of surpassing this total in 2023. Lauren ended up comfortably achieving this goal, raising a total of $25,685 for The Gift.

Lauren had been raising money throughout the year, with the promise of shaving her head at a final fundraising event on Melbourne Cup Day if she was able to reach her target. The event also included a live goods and services auction that included a range of items and vouchers local businesses had contributed.

Lauren said she was delighted with the outcome of the fundraiser.

“The Gift makes such a difference in the lives of people in our region dealing with cancer, so it is great to be able to support their work,” she said.

“It was amazing to see the generosity of friends, family, colleagues, local businesses, and even strangers.”

“The funds will help make a tangible difference to those living with cancer, and will also show people’s eagerness to help them and make their lives a bit less difficult.”

The Gift is run by volunteers and has no administration fees, meaning all funds donated to the charity go to the people it supports.

The Gift Vice Chair Andrew Moore said donations to the charity would help people living with cancer in a variety of ways.

“We work with our clients to understand how we can best support them,” he said.

“For some, it might be paying for doctors’ visits, for others it might be a voucher for the local butcher or bakery, or perhaps a fuel voucher if they need to travel for an appointment. Where possible, we look to provide vouchers for local businesses, so the money goes back into the community.

“We are incredibly grateful to people like Lauren who donate and fundraise for The Gift, their efforts help ensure we can support those in the community who need it most.”
