Lake Meran Local Management Plan endorsed

Lake Meran

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has been developing a Lake Meran Local Management Plan (LMP) in recent months to protect the rights of domestic and stock users and protect environmental values. This plan has been created with careful consideration of a number of different interests.

The development of the LMP has included consideration of the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s (NCCMA) Meran Lakes Complex Environmental Water Management Plan, which is available here on the NCCMA website, and also in the  fact sheet.

The draft LMP was released for public feedback in April 2018, and was endorsed by GMW's Board in May 2018. You can download a copy of the plan here.

Thank you to those who made submissions on the draft plan prior to endorsement. Download a copy of Summary of feedback on draft Lake Meran Local Management Plan.

Our intention is to provide GMW’s customers and the community with an easy-to-understand management framework for surface water resources on Lake Meran. The rules also describe licence trading opportunities and how restrictions to the take and use of water from the lake will be applied.

Lake Meran real-time water level monitoring

In 2018 a real-time water level monitoring instrument was installed to replace manual staff gauges located at the northern end of the lake. This project was undertaken to:

  • Offset the cost of having to regularly recalibrate the vertical staff gauges
  • Remove safety risks to recreational users of the lake
  • Provide continuous monitoring of the water levels
  • Provide information to the wider community that help them plan their activities (I.e. irrigation diversions, boating, camping, fishing)
  • Enhance understanding of how the lake performs under varying seasonal conditions

The data collected by the instrument is transmitted back to GMW and stored within the Water Status information system.

You can access the Lake Meran water level data at our Water Status Reports page - to find the Lake Meran data, follow these steps:

  • Under Report select System Status Report
  • Under Basin select Loddon
  • Under Product select Streamflow
  • Under Station select 407608 Lake Meran (Loddon River).
