History

Lake MokoanLake Mokoan was built in the late 1960s on the site of the former Winton and Green Swamps. It was completed in 1971.

Operations

As an off-stream storage, Lake Mokoan is primarily filled by diversions from the Broken River and Holland's Creek. The inlet channel to the storage has a capacity of 2,400 ML/d.

Local catchment runoff and direct rainfall onto the large surface area also contribute to the storage volume.

The water stored in Lake Mokoan is used for irrigation and domestic and supplies in the downstream Broken River and Broken Creek systems.

Further Information

Lake Mokoan was created in 1971, by enlarging the Winton Swamp near Benalla.  It is one of the State's larger storages with a 52 km shoreline.  Wild ducks, swans and other bird life abound in this ideal breeding area.

The lake offers landscaped picnic areas and a boat launching ramp.  It is very popular with water skiers and wind surfer, swimmers and fishermen.  Yacht races are organised by the Lake Mokoan Yacht Club every Saturday during summer.  Camping and caravanning facilities and wineries are all only a few kilometres away.

Visitors are reminded that there are dangers associated with low water levels and are asked to exercise caution.
