Planning your water needs

The current volume of water in our storages is the highest it has been in recent years and is available for customers to use, trade or carryover. Last year, while customers had good allocations, water deliveries were low due to the wet weather. This season, deliveries have been much higher, so much so, that the total amount of gravity irrigation deliveries for the entire 2010/11 season is expected to be exceeded by Christmas.

Most channels in the Shepparton Irrigation Area and the backbone channels in Central Goulburn Irrigation Area are now operating in automatic mode. Please ensure that you are up to date with the new technology and issues that affect your seasonal planning and water ordering.

2011/12 Allocation and risk of spill updates

Carryover was introduced as an emergency drought response measure and to assist customers manage risk of zero or low start of season allocations and to supplement allocation during the season. The improvement in seasonal conditions since the introduction of carryover was confirmed last week when G-MW began pre-releasing water from Lake Eildon for the first time since 1993. The volume released from 1 July 2011 counts as a spill from Eildon and this has implications for Goulburn system customers' spillable water accounts (SWA). The following explains the role of the Resource Manager in making allocation, outlook, risk of spill and declaration announcements.

Water trading and the Ballot - Why do we need a Ballot?
An annual net limit of 4% applies to the transfer of water shares from each Irrigation Area. A separate 4% limit applies to high and low reliability water shares. There is a likelihood that the 4% limit will be reached. G-MW conducts a ballot at the start of the water trading year (financial year) to ensure equitable access for everyone wanting to transfer water shares out of an Irrigation Area.

If you are unsure if your water share application will be subject to 4% limits, or would like to know more about the application process you should seek professional advice from an experienced broker or advisor.

The following update for Goulburn, Campaspe and Murray system customers is the first in a series that will help you to plan your water use, carryover and trade over the remainder of this season and into 2011/12.
