Rainfall boosts Ovens and King storages to full supply and above threshold for rebate

Thursday 4 December, 2008

Rain events since mid November have boosted supplies on the regulated Ovens and King River systems with customers able to access their full entitlements. As a result G-MW will issue revised fixed water charge accounts for approximately 500 customers who will no longer qualify for the Victorian Government's Drought Assistance Rebate.

According to G-MW Managing Director David Stewart, the accounts were generated in October and at the time the Ovens and King regulated systems' had recorded one of the driest springs on record and restrictions were imminent.

"After consultation with the local Water Services Committee, we made the decision to mail out accounts with the rebate already deducted, but with the understanding we would issue an adjustment account if the season improved significantly by 1 December," explained Mr Stewart.

Since 10 November the Ovens and King systems have enjoyed significant rainfall and the Buffalo and William-Hovell storages continue to spill.

"Even if we see no further rain for the season we would expect Ovens and King regulated customers to have access to at least half their entitlement, which is above the 30% eligibility for the rebate " said Mr Stewart.

Mr Stewart said customers right across the region were experiencing a very challenging season.

"I understand that some customers in the Ovens and King systems will be disappointed at not receiving the rebate, but the improved access to irrigation water will be far more valuable to their farm businesses," said Mr Stewart.

"Over the next few weeks we will issue revised accounts to around 500 customers and we will also extend the payment dates for these customers," said Mr Stewart.

"We ask that Ovens and King regulated customers call their G-MW team if they have any concerns about their accounts or payment terms," said Mr Stewart.
