With many Victorians contemplating holidays closer to home, Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) is urging anyone planning a Christmas break to visit northern Victoria, with many of the region's rivers, lakes and reservoirs offering unrestricted boating and on-water recreational activities.
According to G-MW Managing Director David Stewart the low water levels have hit local agriculture very hard, but the impact on recreational activities varied and there are still many opportunities for boating and on-water activities at the 17 water storages managed by G-MW.
"So many of us associate Christmas with a holiday on the banks of one of Victoria's rivers or lakes. The drought doesn't mean the end of this great tradition - we encourage everyone to enjoy what northern Victoria has to offer," said Mr Stewart.
"Simply looking at the water levels doesn't give the full-picture - it's better to talk with the local Tourism Office to tap into some local knowledge. There are plenty of opportunities for water skiing, boating and other on-water activities, as well as camping along the banks of the region's rivers, lakes and reservoirs," said Mr Stewart.
"We are encouraging people to come north and enjoy what the region has to offer, and at the same time help our local communities during such a difficult period," said Mr Stewart.
"Natural waterways can change over time disguising potential hazards. Everyone should follow prudent water safety precautions and check for hazards before swimming or boating in the area. I also remind everyone that irrigation channels are not a safe location for swimming and should not be used for any form of recreation," said Mr Stewart.
"Camping and driving on dry lake beds is unsafe and prohibited, so please camp only in approved areas Also make sure you don't leave any camp fires unattended and dispose of all rubbish appropriately," said Mr Stewart.
Visitors and locals can check recreational facilities including camping, playgrounds and boating regulations at G-MW's storages at http://www.g-mwater.com.au/, and visitors are also encouraged to contact Parks Victoria or the local Tourism office for further information.
