Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has announced that the 2008/09 seasonal allocations in the Campaspe Deep Lead Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA), initially made on the 15 August 2008, will remain unchanged following a mid-season review of groundwater levels.
G-MW Executive Manager Water Resources Graeme Hannan said the Campaspe Deep Lead WSPA Groundwater Management Plan allows for a start of season allocation and one allocation review during the season.
"This review determines whether an increased allocation can be announced based on an improvement in groundwater recovery during the season," Mr Hannan said.
In August 2008, G-MW announced a 50% allocation for the Campaspe Deep Lead WSPA; an area extending from south of Elmore to Echuca. The mid-season review of this allocation was initially deferred after consultation with the Campaspe Deep Lead Groundwater Reference Committee to allow time for any improvements in groundwater recovery to occur.
While acknowledging that some good rainfall occurred in late spring and early summer, Mr Hannan said "continuing dry conditions have not seen sufficient recovery in the deep lead aquifer system; and as a result, G-MW cannot increase allocations according to rules set by the Campaspe Groundwater Management Plan."
"The dry conditions experienced over several years have resulted in reduced recharge to the aquifer system, while there remains a strong demand for groundwater. As a consequence groundwater levels have dropped during this period and this has affected the amount that can be allocated."
Seasonal allocations affect over 100 licensed groundwater users in the lower Campaspe Valley.
