G-MW and industry groups discuss response to low allocations

Wednesday 8 November, 2006

Goulburn-Murray Water has again met with key industry groups to discuss and coordinate the response to low water allocations this irrigation season.

Goulburn-Murray Water proactively convened the second Low Allocation Response Plans Forum for 2006/07 to provide increased communication to key industry groups while seasonal allocations remain low. The first forum was held on 16 August.

Chairperson Don Cummins said the industry response to the August forum was very positive and Goulburn-Murray Water was keen to provide another update on the relevant information as summer approaches.

"Working together with these industry groups is critical to our low allocation response planning, and the groups themselves have been very appreciative for the detailed information we are providing them," Mr Cummins said.

"Obviously, these unprecedented dry conditions have continued since we last held this forum and it is important that we continue to provide the most up-to-date information to help customers and industries make informed decisions.

"I am very pleased with the support we received from the industry representatives today regarding our response to low allocations and our communications strategy in these dry times."

In addition to a detailed discussion of the current water allocations, key issues presented at today's forum included the Waranga Basin pumping program, the likelihood of extending the season beyond 1 April, water trading issues, industry feedback and Goulburn-Murray Water's management of operations in response to low allocations.

"Goulburn-Murray Water is doing whatever it can to provide as much water and assistance for customers as possible," Mr Cummins said.

"We have established strong links with industry groups and will continue to keep them informed of the current water resource position and the outlook for the rest of the season."
