Water quality improvement at Tullaroop Reservoir
Goulburn-Murray Water has announced that the quality of blue-green algae-affected water at Tullaroop Reservoir has improved markedly in recent weeks.
The announcement followed recent close monitoring by Goulburn-Murray Water that found a significant reduction in the number of blue-green algae cells in the water.
Loddon Headworks Manager Ivan Smith welcomed the development, but said conditions likely to cause future algal blooms are still occurring.
""The reduction of blue-green algae at Tullaroop is a pleasing development,"" Mr Smith said.
""However, we still encourage people to be wary when using the water and to avoid skin contact with any affected water in the reservoir or downstream in the Tullaroop Creek.
""Even at low cell numbers, people sensitive to the skin toxins produced by blue-green algae are likely to have a reaction.""
Goulburn-Murray Water advises the public to avoid contact with any water that is discoloured and that has a musty or earthy smell.
Goulburn-Murray Water will continue to monitor Tullaroop Reservoir closely and will advise of any changes in the algal status.
Anyone finding a suspicious algal bloom can report it via the Goulburn-Murray Water Blue-Green Algae Hotline on (03) 5833 5785.
Goulburn-Murray Water reminds all water users that all water supplied by G-MW is unfit for any use which may involve human consumption, directly or indirectly, without first being properly treated.
