High Levels of Blue-green algae in Lake Mokoan affects Water Supply and Use of the Lake

Thursday 12 January, 2006

Monitoring by Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has detected high levels of blue-green algae in Lake Mokoan .

Goulburn-Murray Water advises the public to avoid direct bodily contact with water from L ake Mokoan .  Other popular activities such as boating and fishing with due care can still be enjoyed on the lake.  Warning signs are being placed at the recreational areas around Lake Mokoan .

Irrigation supplies for the Broken system will now need to be sourced totally from Lake Nillahcootie .  Goulburn-Murray Water will announce on Monday 16 January if the Broken System allocation will be reduced while the blue-green algae bloom continues.

Characteristic signs of algae contact are skin rashes or itchiness; sore eyes, ears and nose; or, if swallowed, gastroenteritis, nausea or vomiting. People with sensitive skin or allergies are at a higher risk.

Blue-green algae may be invisible to the naked eye, however, if they are present in large enough numbers, there may be in a form of scum.  Musty or earthy odours may also be present.  In windy conditions, scums can accumulate in backwaters or protected areas.

Goulburn-Murray Water reminds all water users that all water supplied by G-MW is not fit for any use, which may involve human consumption, directly or indirectly, without first being properly treated.
