15 August water allocation update

Monday 15 August, 2005

Goulburn-Murray Water today announced the 15 August water allocation update for the 2005/06 irrigation season.

Allocation increases have been possible in most systems due to increased storage volumes. Overall winter inflows to storages have been relatively low, despite the recent encouraging rainfall in some catchments.

There is still no allocation for irrigation entitlements in the Campaspe system. There is not yet enough water in Lake Eppalock to meet losses and fixed commitments for the whole season.  The available water in this system is slightly better than at this time last season, due to more carryover held in storage at the end of last season.  July to mid August inflows to Lake Eppalock have been fairly low, and similar to last season.  The allocation outlook for the Campaspe System has worsened since 1 August 2005 due to the relatively low inflows.

In the Murray system the allocation has increased to 100% of Water Right and Licensed Volume.

In the Goulburn system, the allocation has increased to 21% of Water Right and Licensed Volume.

In the Loddon system, the allocation has increased to 9% of Licensed Volume.

In the Broken system, the allocation has increased to 110% of Licensed Volume.

In the Bullarook Creek system, customers supplied from Hepburns Lagoon have an allocation of 108%, while customers who can be supplied from Newlyn Reservoir have an allocation of 126%.

The Murray System has now reached its most likely maximum allocation for the season.  Further Murray System inflows will contribute to building the reserve for next season's allocations.  There is little chance of accumulating this reserve by February 2006, to allow a sales allocation to be made.

Allocation improvements will be mainly influenced by inflows in the remaining winter-spring months. For all systems except the Campaspe system, 100% (or better) of Water Right and Licensed Volume remains the most likely allocation for the coming season. However, there is still a risk of low allocations for some systems, in particular the Campaspe System.

Seasonally adjusted chances of receiving a 100% allocation by 15 February 2006 are as follows:

Goulburn                     5 chances in 10

Campaspe                  1 chance in 10

Loddon                        5 chances in 10

The chances of receiving any sales allocation for Water Rights by 15 February 2006 are as follows:

Goulburn                     <1 chance in 10

Murray                            1 chance in 10

Campaspe                  <1 chance in 10

Loddon                        <1 chance in 10

Broken                         >9 chances in 10

There is an even chance (5 chances in 10), of receiving the following allocations by 15 February:

Goulburn                     100%

Murray                          100%

Campaspe                    21%

Loddon                        100%

Broken                         170%

Goulburn-Murray Water has been able to defer bringing most channels to supply level because of the recent rains.  This action reduces losses, which supports later allocation increases.  Customers who will require a supply should contact their area office or leave a message on Waterline.

The next allocation announcement is scheduled for Thursday 1 September 2005 .
