Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) invites the local community to come along to a public meeting on Thursday 7 June to discuss the establishment of a new Groundwater Management Area and the development of a Local Management Plan for the Upper Goulburn region.
The community meeting will describe the regional groundwater system, explain G-MW's approach to developing a Local Management Plan, and give customers and the community an opportunity to raise any groundwater resource management issues or concerns.
G-MW General Manager Water Services, Graeme Hannan said the Local Management Plan would provide a flexible and adaptive approach to water sharing which suited the particular conditions and characteristics of the region's groundwater system.
"The draft plan will give greater certainty and clarity to groundwater users by providing transparent, cost effective and adaptive management rules, while at the same time considering the environmental values these groundwater resources support," said Mr Hannan.
"G-MW will develop the draft plan in consultation with the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, local governments, water corporations and local communities," added Mr Hannan.
The proposed Upper Goulburn Groundwater Management Area will cover the upper Goulburn catchment from Kinglake and Marysville in the south to Eildon in the east and Alexandra and Yea in the north.
