The 2011/12 irrigation season in the gravity irrigation systems closed last week with Goulburn-Murray Water delivering over 1,250 GL of water to customers across northern Victoria, the highest volume in over 5 years and more than double deliveries last year.
Gavin Hanlon, G-MW Managing Director said 1,250 GL - equivalent to 3 Sydney Harbours or almost half the volume of Lake Eildon - included deliveries to over 14,000 gravity irrigation customers across a region the size of Tasmania.
"The 2011/12 irrigation season was quite unique. Many of our customers and our infrastructure were impacted by floods earlier in the year and we worked closely with the Victorian State Emergency Services and our customers to remove flood waters where we could. At the same time, other parts of our system were in full operation to deliver water required by other customers," Mr Hanlon said.
"While the irrigation season in gravity irrigation areas finished last week, our customers who rely on regulated and unregulated rivers and streams for their supply can access water until 30 June 2012," said Mr Hanlon.
"Total deliveries for 2011/12 to our 25,000 customer base is likely to approach 1,400GL," Mr Hanlon said.
Deliveries to gravity irrigation customers recorded over the last 10 years in GL's includes:
