Blue-Green Algae Levels Decline in Lakes Eildon and Eppalock

Friday 6 January, 2012

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has removed the warning for blue-green algae at Lakes Eildon and Eppalock following a significant decline in algae levels.

While blue-green algae is still present, water quality monitoring and visual inspections over the past week have revealed that the blue-green algae is no longer at levels considered unsafe for recreation.

The warning for blue-green algae was initially issued on 26 October 2011 for Lake Eppalock and 9 December 2011 in Lake Eildon, and today there are no warnings for blue-green algae at any of G MW’s water storages.

The public may now safely swim, ski, wake board and make the most of their time at Lakes Eildon and Eppalock.

Warning signs around Lakes Eildon and Eppalock will be removed.

G MW will continue to conduct regular water quality monitoring and observations throughout the year. If blue-green algae reach levels deemed unsafe by national health guidelines, G-MW will issue a blue-green algae warning. All updates are published at www.g-mwater.com.au/bluegreenalgae-alert.

Water users and customers are advised to remain vigilant for signs of blue-green algae in all lakes, waterways and in the irrigation system, as there may be isolated patches present.  Suspected blooms can be reported to the blue-green algae hotline on phone (03) 5826 3785.

Water users are reminded that all water supplied by G-MW is unfit for human consumption, directly or indirectly, without first being properly treated.

For further information visit the G-MW website at www.g-mwater.com.au or phone the blue-green algae hotline on 03 5826 3785.
