Lake Eildon communities get involved in Plan

Monday 21 November, 2011

More than 500 people have taken the opportunity to have their say about the future of Lake Eildon in consultation activities for Goulburn-Murray Water's Land and On-Water Management Plan.

G-MW Manager of Dams, Stuart Richardson said G-MW was developing separate Plans for all its water storages around Victoria that will focus on what people value and enjoy about using storages - from picnic tables to boat ramps, water sports to wildlife habitat.

"The Plans focus on cultural, environmental and water quality management issues at water storages but are not designed to make recommendations on storage operational issues such as storage fills and releases," Mr Richardson said.

"Water storages are a valued and important asset not just for their role in the water delivery network but also for their recreational opportunities for local communities and visitors," Mr Richardson said.

Community groups, residents and local organisations have been given the chance to contribute their ideas and suggestions on a range of topics relating to Lake Eildon. To help identify key issues and actions needed for the Plan, 179 people participated in community events, meetings with clubs and organisations, "Have a say" sessions and interviews over the last few months.

Mr Richardson said he was delighted with the response by the community, particularly to the on-line survey.

"We've had more than 335 people respond to the survey and what they've had to say has been fantastic," said Mr Richardson.

"There have been about 200 different issues raised - on everything from boating, camping, fishing, facilities and the environment.  That just shows the high level of community ownership and involvement with Lake Eildon, and we are hoping that continues through the remainder of the planning process".

Mr Richardson said the consultation activities will continue in February and March next year, and results from the various consultation activities and survey will form an integral part of the Lake Eildon Land and On-Water Management Plan.

Similar Management Plans have already been completed for Lake Mulwala, Lake Hume, Waranga Basin, Lake Boga and Nillahcootie. Plans are underway for Lake Eppalock, Goulburn Weir and Cairn Curran with William Hovell and Buffalo commencing from next year.

"To register your interest in any of the Land and Water Management Plans simply visit
