Katunga deep lead groundwater customers receive maximum allocation

Friday 29 July, 2011

Goulburn Murray Water (G-MW) today announced a maximum annual allocation of 70% for Katunga Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA) customers for the 2011/12 season. This is the maximum allocation under the Katunga WSPA groundwater management plan.

G-MW Acting Managing Director, Ian Moorhouse said that the allocation was good news for more than 240 customers who rely on the aquifer to access water for irrigation, commercial operations and domestic and stock use.

The Katunga WSPA extends from east of Yarrawonga to the Barmah Forest in the west and from the River Murray to just south of Numurkah.

"Low groundwater use and increased rainfall during the 2010/11 season has enabled another season of maximum allocation for the Katunga WSPA" said Moorhouse.

The allocation announcement has been made following the assessment of a five-year average groundwater use from the deep lead aquifers and average groundwater levels in spring, as specified in the Groundwater Management Plan.
