Improvements to blue-green algae webpage to assist customers and visitors

Wednesday 7 December, 2011

In recognition of the important role water storages play, Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has given its blue-green algae webpage a makeover to improve the way information is provided to customers and the community.

G-MW Manager Dams, Stuart Richardson said the new website features current warnings, advice and key facts about blue-green algae.

"Our water storages are a major recreation destination - particularly over summer - and that is usually the time when blue-green algae warnings are issued," said Mr Richardson.

"Safety is our number one priority and the status of warnings can change at any time. People already at the storage need information, as well as those planning holidays and we want to make sure the very latest information is available to everyone, 24/7," said Mr Richardson.

Swimming is not recommended when a warning is current, but other recreational activities such as boating and sightseeing can still be enjoyed. With the duration of blue-green algae warnings increasing last year one of the challenges, according to Mr Richardson is ensuring recreation users have access to sufficient information to make the best choice about their activities.

"While we erect signs at the storages during an outbreak, there is a lot more we can do to provide information to our communities. This webpage is the first step in providing a one-stop-shop for blue-green algae information. We're trying to make it as easy as possible for customers and recreational users of water storages to find the information they need," explained Mr Richardson.

The new webpage, located at www.g-mwater.com.au/bluegreenalgae-alert provides the warning status for each storage and irrigation area, as well as fact sheets for recreation users, houseboats, irrigators and stock and domestic users.

"As we get ready for summer and the peak blue-green algae season, we are looking at using multiple methods to warn customers and users. If you are planning a holiday to a water storage it is important to you know if there are any warnings, and what activities you can still do on and around the storage," said Mr Richardson.

"I urge everyone to check the new webpage when planning a visit to a water storage this summer," said Mr Richardson.
