G-MW tests Lake Eildon spillway flood gates - no impact for downstream communities

Monday 10 October, 2011

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) will undertake the final testing of the Lake Eildon spillway flood gates, following upgrading of the gates operating mechanism this Wednesday 12 October from approximately 11am.

G-MW Manager Dams Stuart Richardson said the water released for this testing will be contained within the Lake Eildon pondage and have no impact on the Goulburn River below Eildon or on downstream communities.

"The testing will take around 1 hour in total.  Each of the three gates will be opened to 600 millimetres and then closed over a four to five minute duration," Mr Richardson said.

The testing will release approximately 150 megalitres of water - or around 60 Olympic sized swimming pools.

A spillway is a feature of a dam which is designed to pass excess flood water from the storage.  The Lake Eildon spillway gates were last operated in 1996.
