G-MW Checklist - Do you need a groundwater licence?

Wednesday 20 July, 2011

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) is encouraging anyone using groundwater, which includes water from bores and spear points, to confirm if they need a licence for their water use.

G-MW Acting Managing Director Shane McGrath said G-MW was issuing the reminder because of the increased use of groundwater over recent years and some customers may have changed the purpose for which they access their water.

"The licensing system underpins the reliability and security of this resource for all water users now and for years to come, so it's vital everyone is aware of their obligations," said Mr McGrath.

Mr McGrath also explained that unlike surface water that you can see, groundwater monitoring requires considerably more time and resources. The licensing system helps reduce these monitoring costs through the fair and equitable management of water entitlements.
