Email updates keep water users informed

Friday 21 October, 2011

Customers, residents and local businesses have rushed to embrace the digital services Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) is using to keep communities informed of water storage activities in their area.

More than 360 people have now subscribed to G-MW's electronic newsletter, e-storage update, that provides regular updates on the progress of Land and On-Water Management Plans being developed for each of its storages across northern Victoria.

G-MW Manager Dams Stuart Richardson said the new e-storage update gives readers the latest information on water storages of particular interest to them and includes storage levels, progress reports on Land and On-Water Management Plans and events.

"Land and On-Water Management Plans are developed through extensive community, stakeholder, agency and recreational user consultation and identify key issues and actions needed to manage recreational activities, safe storage access, water quality and facilities management and development," said Mr Richardson.

"We have received a lot of interest in both the e-storage updates and Land and On-Water Management Plans from the community, especially from those interested in recreation at the storages," said Mr Richardson.

"Now, people can simply visit the G-MW website to register and get the news straight to their email in-box," said Mr Richardson.

Apart from harvesting, storing and delivering water to customers, G-MW has the challenging task of managing waterways and public land use adjacent to each of G-MW's 16 storages scattered across a region the size of Tasmania.

"Water storages are used for a multitude of purposes - not only recreation like fishing and boating, but also tourism, commercial activities and farming. They are valuable community assets and G-MW has a clear responsibility to ensure they are managed sustainably for everyone to enjoy now and in the future," Mr Richardson said.

"This is why we are developing Land and On-Water Management Plans and involving members of the community, as well as local councils and authorities, in their development," Mr Richardson said.

"Land and On-Water Management Plans for Lake Eildon, Goulburn Weir and Lake Boga are currently underway. Plans for Waranga Basin, Yarrawonga Weir, Hume Dam and Lake Nillahcootie have been completed and are available from G-MW's website. Plans for Lake Eppalock, Cairn Curran, Buffalo and William Hovell are due to start next year.
