After more than a decade of drought, most of Goulburn-Murray Water's (G-MW) water storages across northern Victoria are at full capacity, creating ideal opportunities for boating and on-water recreational activities.
G-MW Acting Managing Director Shane McGrath said there had been a huge increase in visitor numbers to water storages, but reminded visitors to take care on and around the water this summer.
"With summer holidays approaching and water levels at the highest not seen in over 10 years, we encourage people to take advantage of the tremendous water-based opportunities that this region has to offer," Mr McGrath said.
"We also urge everyone to remain vigilant and to ‘stay safe' while taking part in boating or other on-water recreational activities. With the recent storms and high inflows the conditions in our storages may have changed.
"People need to be aware of floating debris or trees and snags that may have moved in the recent storms. Another naturally-occurring event that can crop up during the warmer months is blue-green algae, which we monitor regularly and will advise the community if significant levels are detected," said Mr McGrath.
"Many of us associate summer with enjoying water-based activities and we encourage everyone to enjoy one or more of this state's most precious lakes or rivers that are located in northern Victoria," Mr McGrath said.
Visitors and locals can check recreational facilities including camping, playgrounds and boating regulations at G-MW's storage information at www.g-mwater.com.au
