Its seen over 1 million visitors and even appeared on the Australian half sovereign and 10 shilling banknote, so there will be many people pleased to hear that from next month the iconic Goulburn Weir will again be open to the public after upgrade works to withstand the largest floods experts have determined could occur.
Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) Acting Managing Director Shane McGrath said Goulburn Weir was a critical structure in the organisation's irrigation delivery system and this upgrade would allow the weir to operate reliably for many decades to come.
"The $3.35 million upgrade project was delivered on time and under budget," said Mr McGrath.
"A review of the Weir's design showed that under very large floods, its operating deck would not have been able to withstand the loads applied by water and debris that might build up against it," he said.
In addition, the Weir's electrical control system was upgraded to ensure reliable operation and consistency with other modernised irrigation assets," Mr McGrath said.
With works now complete, the Goulburn Weir will again be open to the public from Saturday 4 December.
The opening hours of the structure will be the same as those prior to the construction works - 7.30am to 4pm daily.
"It should be noted that from time to time the Weir structure will be required to be closed for short periods to allow G-MW to carry out critical maintenance activities," Mr McGrath said.
Goulburn-Murray Water appreciates the community patience and assistance during construction works over the past 11 months.
