Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) reminds all customers that water sourced from its rivers and channel network is not for fit for human consumption either directly or indirectly without being properly treated.
G-MW Managing Director David Stewart said the warning was extremely relevant following the recent intense rainfall.
"Soil and other debris have washed into the waterways and makes the water look dirty, but we also need to be careful of the things we can't see!" said Mr Stewart.
Some regional water corporations have reported minor asset failures at water treatment facilities but
G-MW wants all water users to keep in mind that flood waters flow outside river banks and may pick up effluent, chemicals and other contaminants that are not obvious to the human eye.
G-MW is urging all customers who access water directly from rivers, streams and dams to take appropriate steps to check the quality of their water supplies.
"We urge everyone to be careful around the water storages, rivers and water ways. We also remind everyone that all water supplied by G-MW is raw, and not suitable for human consumption either directly or indirectly without being properly treated," said Mr Stewart.
Mr Stewart also reminded the community that the Bureau of Meteorology is publishing regular updates of river levels and the State Emergency Service is issuing all flood emergency alerts.
"We are working closely with both agencies as the water moves through the river network," said Mr Stewart.
