Eildon and Cobram students win G-MW photo competition

Monday 30 August, 2010

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has announced the winners of its World Environment Day Photography Competition as Jacob Smoglian from Eildon Primary School, Natasha Rose from Cobram Secondary School, Dennis Patterson from Mooroopna and Kim Brewer from Tatura.

The theme of World Environment Day in 2010 is "Many species: One Planet. One Future" as the United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity

G-MW Managing Director David Stewart said G-MW asked members of the public to submit photos of plants, animals and/or landscapes that capture the diversity of life and environments and illustrate the importance of biodiversity in our world.

"This year's competition received a record 120 entries and the standard of photographs submitted was exceptionally high leaving the panel of four independent judges with a very tough job to select winners under the Primary School, Secondary School, Open Age categories and a G-MW staff category," Mr Stewart said.

The Primary School category was won by eleven year old Jacob Smoglian, from Eildon Primary School, with his picture titled "Eildon Pondage from the Bridge".

The Secondary School category was won by fifteen year old Natasha Rose from Cobram Secondary School, with her picture titled "Cloud of Waves".

This year's Open Age category was won by Dennis Patterson from Mooroopna for his picture titled "The Elements".

Kim Brewer from Tatura won the G-MW staff category for her picture titled "Bubbles for life".

"Just as our business is changing to meet the needs of future challenges, so to is our environment, and combined with an opportunity to acknowledge local young talent, we are proud to sponsor this event," Mr Stewart said.

Winners have been informed and G-MW is in the process of organising the presentation of prizes.  The School winners receive an indigenous tree to be planted at their school as well as a $150 gift voucher.

Photos entered in the competition will be able to be viewed at G-MW's office foyer in Tatura and at www.g-mwater.com.au/environment
