Blue-Green Algae levels decline in the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area and Kerang Lakes

Wednesday 15 December, 2010

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has announced a recent improvement in water quality in the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area and Kerang Lakes following a decline in the concentration of blue-green algae. This follows the recently announced reduction in algae levels in Kangaroo Lake.

G-MW Acting Managing Director Shane McGrath said a blue-green algae alert for the Kerang Lakes was issued on 1 October 2010 and was then extended to include parts of the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area on 21 October 2010.

"Regular monitoring has been undertaken since the alerts were issued and we are pleased to see that the level of blue-green algae in the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area and the Kerang Lakes has reduced in recent weeks and the water now poses a low risk for recreation, stock and non-consumptive domestic uses," Mr McGrath said.

Water users and customers are advised to remain vigilant for signs of blue-green algae in the irrigation system as there may still be isolated patches present, especially in the smaller spur channels.

"G-MW will continue to conduct regular water quality monitoring and will advise if there are any significant changes in the concentration levels of blue green algae," said Mr McGrath.

Suspected blooms can be reported to your local G-MW office or telephone 03 5833 5785.

Water users are reminded that all water supplied by G-MW is unfit for human consumption, directly or indirectly, without first being properly treated.
