Blue-Green Algae levels decline in Kangaroo Lake

Friday 5 November, 2010

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) has announced a recent improvement in water quality at Kangaroo Lake following a decline in the concentration of blue-green algae.

G-MW Managing Director David Stewart said a blue-green algae alert for Kangaroo Lake was issued on 1 October 2010, which also included alerts at Kow Swamp and Little Lake Charm.

"Regular monitoring has been undertaken since the alert was issued, with recent results confirming that the concentration of blue-green algae has decreased at Kangaroo Lake and water now poses a low risk for recreation, stock and non-consumptive domestic uses," Mr Stewart said.

Lake Boga and Lake Charm currently remain unaffected by blue green algae.

Although the blue-green algae levels at Kangaroo Lake have declined, the blue green algae levels at Kow Swamp and Little Lake Charm remain high.

High alerts also remain in place for the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area, excluding the Gunbower Creek system.

"Water users are advised to remain vigilant for signs of blue-green algae as there may still be isolated patches present," Mr Stewart said.

"G-MW will continue to conduct regular water quality monitoring tests throughout the system and will advise if there are any significant changes in the concentration levels of blue green algae," said Mr Stewart.

Suspected blooms can be reported to your local G-MW office or telephone 03 5833 5785.

Water users are reminded that all water supplied by G-MW is unfit for human consumption, direction or indirectly, without first being properly treated.
