Unauthorised earthworks at Eildon raise safety and access concerns

Friday 25 September, 2009

Continuing examples of unauthorised earthworks occurring on the foreshore of Lake Eildon has dismayed Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW), local residents and Murrindindi Council forcing G-MW to pursue prosecution of landholders undertaking earthworks without approvals.

G-MW has recently responded to complaints from residents at Taylor Bay and is currently pursuing prosecution of a landholder who has carried out earthworks on G-MW foreshore land without having obtained any approvals.

G-MW's Land and Water Management Officer Jeff Harrison said the behaviour of a small minority of landowners in carrying out works without approval is unacceptable.

"Inappropriate or poorly designed earthworks can greatly contribute to foreshore erosion, storm water damage and deterioration of water quality in Lake Eildon," Mr Harrison said.

"G-MW manages the foreshore of Lake Eildon and other water storages to provide safe public access to recreational users and to protect water quality within the storage,"

"Any works on G-MW land require approval from G-MW as land owner and planning approval from Council,"

Residents seeking to undertake any earthworks in or around the foreshore land should contact G-MW on phone 1800 013 357 or contact the Murrindindi Council on phone - 5772 0333

Landowners who did not obtain appropriate approvals for works on the foreshore adjacent to water storages could face prosecution under the Water Act.
