Protect a valuable resource - don't bore without a licence
Continued interest in groundwater across Northern Victoria has prompted Goulburn-Murray Water to issue a reminder about licensing.
G-MW Manager Water Services Kevin Preece said continuing dry conditions has seen an increase in the number of bores drilled each year as customers sought an alternate water supply for stock and domestic supply and irrigation and commercial purposes.
"The licensing process for bores ensures existing licence holders and the environment are not disadvantaged and aquifers and groundwater quality are protected," Mr Preece said.
G-MW manages around half of all of Victoria's groundwater resources and licensed bores.
Landowners and drillers must have a Bore Construction Licence before they start any work to drill a new bore or alter an existing one. Landowners are also reminded that bores can only be drilled by a licensed, qualified driller.
"While we understand owners are often anxious to have a bore drilled they must have a licence and also read and understand their licence conditions before any works can begin," Mr Preece said.
"Drillers must also understand and adhere to all the conditions on the Bore Construction Licence and check that it hasn't expired," said Mr Preece.
Under the Water Act 1989, both the landowner and the driller are responsible for ensuring the bore is drilled according to all licence conditions.
"Once work is complete, drillers must send a report to G-MW within 14 days."
