Goulburn Weir facilities updated to include security fencing
Goulburn-Murray Water’s popular picnic reserve at Goulburn Weir has recently undergone a major facelift to improve facilities and public safety.
Works recently completed include new children’s playground, upgraded barbeque rotunda, with new paving and shade sails, and new picnic tables. A number of dead and dangerous pine trees have been removed and additional safety fencing is being installed beside the main structure.
Stuart Richardson, G-MW’s Manager Dams said safety marker buoys have been installed upstream of the weir gates to alert recreational users that swimming and boating are not permitted due to the dangerous conditions which may be encountered close to the structure.
“Additional safety measures which have been included in the upgrade of the recreation area are aimed at addressing recommendations from the Coroner following a tragic drowning that occurred in October 2006,” Mr Richardson said.
Also in line with the Coroners recommendations, and to recognise the cultural diversity of users of the area, multi lingual warning signs have been installed at access points to the recreation reserve at Goulburn Weir.
Following the Coroner’s recommendations, G-MW consulted with stakeholders and had works completed in eight months.
“The area downstream of the weir structure has been highlighted as being extremely dangerous due to the underwater currents and therefore poses a significant risk to the public. This area will be fenced and signed to prohibit public access,” said Mr Richardson.
These additional works are expected to be completed by July 2009.
