2017 Victorian Duck Hunting season

Friday 17 February, 2017

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding those participating in the 2017 duck hunting season that it has maps online outlining where hunting is permitted at its lakes, dams and reservoirs.

In January, Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford announced the dates and guidelines for the 2017 duck hunting season, which runs for a 12-week period, from Saturday 18 March to Monday 12 June.

GMW Manager Recreation and Land Strategy David Jackson said duck hunting during the specified season dates would be permitted at Cairn Curran Reservoir, Hume Reservoir, Tullaroop Reservoir, Lake Eppalock, Laanecoorie Reservoir, Greens Lake, Lake Eildon, Lake Buffalo, Waranga Basin, Lake Charm, Kangaroo Lake, Racecourse Lake, Lake Nillachootie, Lake Nagambie and Goulburn Weir.

He said duck hunters needed to be aware that private property could adjoin GMW land, waterways and storages, meaning hunters needed to seek the consent of landholders to hunt or pass through their private property.

Duck hunting is not allowed along the GMW channel network at any time.

“We encourage hunters to visit our website to access a range of dedicated maps outlining where you can hunt and indicating prohibited areas generally situated around high use public visitation sites or essential water storage assets,” Mr Jackson said.

“It’s also important to remember that our water storages are used by many people for a range of activities we urge hunters to consider other members of the public and the environment, by acting in a safe and responsible manner at all times.

“Please also remember that the use of firearms and hunting in public recreational areas and around storage assets is prohibited.”
