2007/2008 Vacation Employment Testimonials

Mary Shi"Working at G-MW was an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to be part of the Vacation Program.  I worked with the surface and drainage group during the times at G-MW. G-MW gave me the opportunity to develop skills in team work, communications and gave me the opportunity to incorporate the knowledge I have already learnt at University and put it into practice. The working environment at G-MW was one of the major aspects that made work experience worthwhile, with the help of friendly and supporting staff and supervisors, I was able develop the skills and demonstrate my abilities for the work given.

I was most impressed with G-MW for the effort put into the vacation program. I had a personal week by week schedule to keep me on track. The vacation students were all taken on a tour around the country to observe the different structures and constructions and special functions were organised for the vacation students to get to know each other and discuss about the opportunities G-MW offered to the graduates.

Having worked at G-MW for vacation work is invaluable to my future. Working at G-MW was full of innovation and challenges. I would strongly recommend working with G-MW. It has helped me to develop and enhance my skills to a new level and opened my eyes to life outside the city of Melbourne."

Whilst at GMW, I worked as part of the Science, Technology and Innovation research team which trailed integrating wireless technology to automate irrigation strategies at the University of Melbourne Dookie campus.  I was responsible for the collection of both midday and predawn water potential for the experimental data.

The collected data allow me to assess the water balance of the orchard trees and allow assessment of the soil moisture depletion for the automated irrigation practice. The remainder of time was spent writing my findings of the experiment under the supervision and guidance of Derek Poulton and Mike Schulz, who I have great respect for. The work was excellent as it gave me a good mix between outdoor and office style working environments.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at GMW, the community style working environment creates an pleasant atmosphere around the office and there is always a helping hand around when needed.  GMW facilities were of excellent standard and resources for further research were abundant. For those who have an interest in the resource sector, I highly recommend applying for GMW, as there is ample opportunity for professional growth.

My time at Kerang was most enjoyable. The people that I was involved with were all very helpful and friendly. They really made my stay for 12 weeks really, really enjoyable. I gained valuable work experience working on projects such as the Catumnal pipeline and the Lake Boga Subway. Other roles that I was involved in included,  surveying channel banks and designing culverts from scratch. The experience that I gained from Goulburn Murray Water has opened many pathways.

I found vacation work with GMW an exciting new experience. The people were friendly, and my supervisors were helpful and made effort to give me experience in areas that I wanted to pursue. It was interesting to learn about how the Goulburn- Murray system works, and to see and learn about all the important infrastructure. I would definitely recommend vacation work with GMW to anyone who is interested in the water industry.
